Passports, insurance, a free GHIC, currency, parking and a budget — every job dated back from your departure.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Check every passport has enough validity
Task · Due 10 weeks before your departure date
Do this **early** so there's time to renew. Aim for **6+ months' validity to be safe** — requirements vary by country. For the EU/Schengen a passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive **and** valid at least 3 months after you leave, so an old-but-unexpired passport can still be refused. Ireland is exempt. Check {{destination}}'s entry requirements, and don't book travel until passports are valid — gov.uk asks you to check current renewal times before you apply.

Sign in to set upGet or renew travel insurance
Task · Due 8 weeks before your departure date
Buy it **when you book**, not just before you fly, so cancellation cover starts straight away. A GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance.
Get a free GHIC for European travel
Task · Due 8 weeks before your departure date
The UK GHIC is **completely free** and gives access to state healthcare in the EEA plus Switzerland — apply **only via the NHS**. Many lookalike sites charge a fee for a card that is free; ignore them. A GHIC lasts up to 5 years and is **not** a replacement for travel insurance.
Order currency or an eSIM
Task · Due 1 week before your departure date
Sort cash or a travel card and a data plan before you go — airport rates are poor.
Book airport parking or transfers
Task · Due 6 weeks before your departure date
Booking ahead is far cheaper than turning up on the day.
Arrange car hire at destination country
Task · Due 6 weeks before your departure date
Optional — book early for the best rates, and check whether you need an International Driving Permit.
Arrange a pet sitter, kennel or house sitter
Task · Due 4 weeks before your departure date
Good kennels and sitters book up early. Skip if you have no pets or home to cover.
Pause deliveries & set a mail-collection plan
Task · Due 1 week before your departure date
Pause recurring deliveries and ask a neighbour to clear the doormat so the house doesn't look empty.
Pack & run a final checklist
Task · Due 2 days before your departure date
Passports, tickets, chargers, meds, adapters — check everyone's bag against a list.
Set an out-of-office
Task · Due 1 day before your departure date
Switch on email/work auto-replies before you switch off.
Download boarding passes & check in online
Task · Due 1 day before your departure date
Online check-in usually opens 24–48h before — save passes to your phone wallet.
Claim on travel insurance if anything went wrong
Task · Due 3 days after your return date
Delays, cancellations, lost bags or medical costs? Claims have deadlines — start while it's fresh and you still have receipts.

While you're away
Guidance
Quick house checklist for while you're away: put bins out on the right day (or ask a neighbour), arrange someone to water plants, set the heating to a frost-protect / holiday setting, unplug what you can, and lock up windows and doors. This note creates nothing.
Welcome to your Family Holiday setup
Guidance
We've dated every job back from your departure: passports first (they take the longest), then insurance, a **free GHIC** for Europe (via the NHS — never a paid copycat site), currency, parking and packing, plus a simple trip budget. Reuse this setup for every trip — just set new dates. This note creates nothing.
