Confirm your deposit is protected & get the reference
Task · Due 30 days after your move-in date
Your landlord must protect your deposit in a government-backed scheme and give you written “prescribed information” (which scheme, your deposit reference, how to get it back). In **England & Wales that’s within 30 days** of them receiving it — in **Scotland it’s 30 working days** (about 6 weeks) and in **Northern Ireland 28 days**, using different schemes; check the rule for where you live. Your job: confirm which scheme holds it (in E&W, one of the Deposit Protection Service, MyDeposits or the Tenancy Deposit Scheme), get your deposit reference/certificate, and keep the paperwork.
Do & photograph the check-in inventory
Task · Due 2 days after your move-in date
On (or just after) move-in, photograph and date the condition of every room and any existing damage. This is your evidence for getting your deposit back — keep it safe.
Set up a standing order for rent
Task · Due 3 days before your move-in date
Set up a standing order (£{{monthly_rent}}/month) so rent leaves your account automatically on the agreed day. Set the first payment for your rent due date.
Tenancy end / break date (fixed-term length)

Your fixed term ({{tenancy_length}}) and any break clause. This is set to 12 months from move-in by default — adjust it to your actual end date. You’ll usually need to give notice (often a month or two) before you can leave, so the reminder lands early.
Tenancy deposit

A one-off outgoing, usually a few weeks’ rent, paid before you move in — adjust the amount to what your landlord asks for. It should be protected in a scheme (see the deposit task).
First month’s rent

Usually due up front on or before move-in. Set the amount to your monthly rent; your standing order covers the months after.

Take opening meter readings on move-in day, then set up your energy and water accounts, tell the council you’ve moved (council tax) and order broadband — broadband can take a couple of weeks to activate, so start it early. See the Household Admin setup.
Sort contents insurance

Your landlord insures the building, not your belongings. Contents insurance covers your things against theft, fire and water damage — usually a few pounds a month.
Register to vote at your new address
Task · Due 7 days after your move-in date
Moving means you need to register again at your new address — it only takes a few minutes and also helps your credit record.
