Plan the day and survive the paperwork — from giving notice to the whole name-change cascade, dated to your wedding day.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Book your give-notice appointment at the register office
Task · Due 12 weeks before your wedding date
**Legally required before you can marry.** Give notice in person by appointment at least **29 days** before the wedding (**28 days in Northern Ireland**) and **no more than 12 months** before — the two numbers are separate rules: 29 days is the minimum lead time, 12 months is how long the notice stays valid. You must have lived in the registration district for the past 7 days. Book **10–12 weeks ahead** — appointments fill up. In Scotland, submit the marriage notice no more than 3 months and no fewer than 29 days before the date.
Per-category spend against a rough total of £rough total budget (£).

Update your passport to your married name
Task · Due 2 weeks after your wedding date
Apply with your marriage/civil-partnership certificate. You can apply up to **3 months before** the wedding, but the new passport is **post-dated** and can't be used until after the ceremony — and the name on it must match the name used to book any honeymoon travel. **Check this year's passport fee on gov.uk** (a name-change renewal costs the same as a normal renewal and needs no countersignature).
Update your driving licence (and V5C log book)
Task · Due 2 weeks after your wedding date
**Free** — it does not cost anything to change your name. Use form **D1** (from a Post Office or gov.uk) with your marriage certificate, and also update your **V5C** vehicle log book. You're legally required to keep these details up to date.
Welcome to your Getting Married setup
Guidance
We've laid out the whole run-up dated to your wedding day: the **legal must-do** (book your give-notice appointment 10–12 weeks ahead — it's required, and timing differs by nation), the suppliers, a per-category **budget** in the ledger, and the post-wedding **name-change cascade** so nothing gets forgotten. Set your nation and guest count above, then adjust the budget amounts to your real quotes. This note creates nothing.
