The UK side of an international move — HMRC, tax residency, pets, post, healthcare and your belongings, dated to your move.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Added as a profile, with everything below linked to it.
Start pet-travel prep for pet's name (or "your pet") (microchip & rabies)
Task · Due 12 weeks before your move date
To take a dog, cat or ferret from **Great Britain** to the EU, {{pet_name}} must be **microchipped** and have an up-to-date **rabies vaccination** — arrange these well ahead. Some destinations also need a tapeworm treatment for dogs. Check the gov.uk pet-travel checker for {{destination_country}}. **Rules differ for Northern Ireland** (NI stays in the EU pet-passport scheme).
Get pet's name (or "your pet")'s Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from your vet
Task · Due 7 days before your move date
From **22 April 2026, GB pet passports are no longer valid for EU entry** — you need an **Animal Health Certificate (AHC)** from your vet instead. It must be issued **no more than 10 days before travel**, then covers EU entry, onward EU travel and return to GB for up to 6 months. Book your vet appointment to land inside that 10-day window.

Check whether you'll still be UK tax resident
Task · Due 8 weeks before your move date
Whether you stay UK tax resident depends on days spent in the UK under the **Statutory Residence Test** (the UK tax year runs 6 April–5 April). Use HMRC's residence-status checker.
Tell HMRC you're leaving the UK (form P85)
Task · Due 2 weeks after your move date
Use **form P85** to tell HMRC you've left and get your Income Tax right (you may be owed a refund) — **unless** you complete a Self Assessment return for the year you leave, in which case you report it in the residence section of that return instead. There's no P85 deadline, but do it soon after you go.

Get international removals / shipping quotes
Task · Due 12 weeks before your move date
International shipping books up and prices vary widely — get several quotes early and check what's covered by customs at {{destination_country}}.
Set up a currency / FX transfer plan
Task · Due 6 weeks before your move date
Moving savings abroad through a specialist FX provider usually beats a high-street bank's rate — compare fees and exchange rates before you transfer.
Arrange expat / international health insurance
Task · Due 4 weeks before your move date
Check whether you'll be covered by {{destination_country}}'s state system from day one — if not, line up international health (and belongings-in-transit) cover before you travel.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Sort your visa/residence permit & register with local authorities
Task · Due 1 week after your move date
Many countries require you to register your address and complete residency/visa formalities within days or weeks of arriving — check {{destination_country}}'s official rules before you travel.
Open a local bank account
Task · Due 2 weeks after your move date
You'll usually need proof of address and ID; a local account makes rent, bills and salary far easier.
Register for healthcare and (if needed) schools
Task · Due 3 weeks after your move date
Register with the local health system (using your S1 if you have one) and sort school places for any children as soon as you're settled.
International removals / shipping
Cost · £3,000.00 · One-off · Payment 1 week before your move date
A one-off outgoing — a container or shipment can run anywhere from ~£1,500 to £8,000+ depending on volume and distance; set the amount from your quotes.
Expat / travel & belongings insurance
Cost · £600.00 · One-off · Payment 3 weeks before your move date
A one-off outgoing for cover around the move; adjust to the policy you choose.
Check healthcare cover — apply for an S1 if eligible
Task · Due 6 weeks before your move date
If you get the **UK State Pension** and are moving to the **EU, EEA or Switzerland**, you can apply for an **S1 form** (up to 90 days before you move) so the UK pays for your state healthcare there — register the S1 with the local authority when you arrive. Otherwise, plan how you'll register for healthcare in {{destination_country}}.
Sign in to add this setup to your household — every task, project and cost dated to your own timeline in one tap.
Sign in to set upNotify your council, utilities and TV licence
Task · Due 2 weeks before your move date
Give final meter readings, close or transfer accounts, and tell the council so your Council Tax is stopped from your move date.
Tell your bank, pension and providers your new address
Task · Due 2 weeks before your move date
Update your bank, workplace/private pensions, insurers and subscriptions. Some UK accounts can't be kept once you're non-resident — ask each provider.
Set up Royal Mail post redirection
Task · Due 1 week before your move date
Royal Mail can redirect your **letters** to an overseas address for 3, 6 or 12 months (parcels aren't redirected abroad). There's a fee that depends on how long you redirect for — check Royal Mail's current price.
Welcome to your Moving Country setup
Guidance
We've laid out the **UK / leaving side** of your move — tax and notifications, removals, money, pets, healthcare — plus a light arriving-side checklist, all dated to your move date. Two to get right: tell HMRC you're leaving with **form P85** (unless you file Self Assessment), and for pets from **Great Britain** get an **Animal Health Certificate** within 10 days of travel — GB pet passports no longer work for the EU. The arriving-country steps depend on your destination, so treat those as prompts. This note creates nothing.
