Check your forecast, claim your State Pension, sort your workplace pensions and tax — all dated to your retirement.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Check your State Pension forecast
Task · Due 18 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
See your forecast amount, your State Pension age, your qualifying years and how you might increase it. You'll need a GOV.UK One Login. (You can't use the online forecast if you already get, or have deferred, your State Pension.) Your forecast figure is personal — read it from the tool.
Confirm your own State Pension age
Task · Due 18 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
Your State Pension age depends on your date of birth and is changing — it's phasing from 66 to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028. Check yours with the GOV.UK tool so your target date is right.
Review your workplace & private pensions
Task · Due 12 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
Track down every pot (old employers too), check the values and how each is invested. You can normally access a workplace or private pension from age 55 — rising to 57 from 6 April 2028 (some older schemes keep a protected age of 55). This is separate from, and lower than, your State Pension age.
State Pension income (set to your forecast)
Cost · £0.00 · Recurring · Money in · Payment On your target retirement / State Pension date
A recurring incoming payment. Set the amount to your own forecast figure from GOV.UK (it's paid every 4 weeks) — we don't fill in an amount because it's personal to your record.

Guidance
We've dated each step to your retirement date: check your State Pension forecast and your own State Pension age, get free Pension Wise guidance on your workplace and private pensions, sort your tax, and **claim your State Pension — it doesn't start automatically**. Your State Pension age depends on your date of birth and is changing, so always check yours on GOV.UK rather than assuming. This note creates nothing.

Sign in to set upBook a free Pension Wise appointment
Task · Due 6 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
Pension Wise is free, impartial, government-backed guidance (via MoneyHelper) on your options for taking money from a defined-contribution pension — including how much you can take tax-free. It's for ages 50–74, by phone, video or online. It's guidance, not regulated financial advice.
Understand your tax in retirement
Task · Due 3 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
Your State Pension is taxable income but is paid without any tax taken off — so tax on it is usually collected through your other pensions or a tax code. You only pay Income Tax once your total income tops your Personal Allowance (check this year's figure — £12,570 for 2026/27, currently frozen).
State Pension invitation letter due (claim opens)
Event · Starts 2 months before your target retirement / State Pension date
You should get an invitation to claim no later than 2 months before you reach State Pension age. If it hasn't arrived by then, chase it — the pension does not start on its own.
Claim your State Pension
Task · Due 1 month before your target retirement / State Pension date
The State Pension is **not** paid automatically — you have to claim it (online, by phone or by post). There's no deadline and a late claim can be backdated up to 12 months, but claiming near your date avoids gaps. In Northern Ireland you claim via nidirect, not GOV.UK.
Update your budget for retirement income
Task · Due 1 month before your target retirement / State Pension date
Map your retirement income (State Pension + any workplace/private pensions or savings) against your outgoings, and note when each income starts — they may not all begin on the same day.
