Annual boiler / heating service

HSE **recommends** having your boiler and gas appliances serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer — best done before the heating season. It's recommended, not legally required, for people who own and live in their own home (the annual gas-safety-check duty applies to landlords). Any gas work must by law be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer — check yours is registered before they start.

Fire the heating up before you need it and bleed any radiators that are cold at the top — a quick job that catches problems while there's still time to book someone.
Clear gutters & drains

Once the leaves are down, clear gutters and downpipes so autumn and winter rain drains away instead of backing up. Work safely at height, or book someone.
Frost-protect outdoor taps & pipes

Before the first frost, lag exposed pipes and outdoor taps and disconnect the hose — a small job that heads off a burst pipe.
Test smoke & CO alarms

Fire services recommend testing your smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms every month — press the test button on each one. It's best-practice guidance rather than a homeowner legal duty (the alarm regulations bind landlords, and rules differ across the UK). A handy peg for the twice-yearly battery change: the clocks change on the last Sunday in March (forward) and the last Sunday in October (back) — check this year's date.
Spring deep-clean & window/roof check

The seasonal reset: a proper clean, and a look over windows, seals and the roof from the ground for anything winter loosened, while the weather's kind.
Service the lawnmower
