File and pay your Self Assessment on time — every deadline counted back from 31 January so nothing triggers a penalty.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Register for Self Assessment with HMRC
Task · Due 118 days before your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
**Only if you're newly self-employed this year.** You must tell HMRC you need to file by **5 October** following the end of the tax year — do it early so your UTR arrives in time to file online.
Gather your records (income, expenses, interest, dividends)
Task · Due 2 months before your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
Pull together everything the return needs — self-employment income and expenses, employment P60/P45, bank interest, dividends and any other income. Doing this in December avoids the January scramble.

Routine · Repeats monthly
Move a slice of each month's income into a separate pot so the January bill is already covered. A common rule of thumb is 20–30% of profit, but set it to your own rate.
File your online tax return
Task · Due On your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
Submit your online return by **31 January, 11:59pm**. Filing late is an **automatic £100 penalty, even if you have no tax to pay** — so don't leave it to the last night.
Pay your tax bill
Task · Due On your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
Payment is also due by **31 January** — filing and paying are separate steps, so don't assume submitting the return has settled the bill. Allow time for your payment method to clear.
Second payment on account
Task · Due 6 months after your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
**Only if you make payments on account.** Your second payment on account for the year is due by **31 July**. HMRC tells you the amount when you file.
Self Assessment tax bill
Cost · £0.00 · One-off · Payment On your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
A one-off outgoing due 31 January — set the amount to your estimated bill so it shows up in your budget ahead of time.
Accountant / bookkeeping fee
Cost · £250.00 · One-off · Payment 1 month before your online filing & payment deadline (31 January)
If you use an accountant or bookkeeping software, budget their fee here and adjust the amount to what you actually pay.
Filing on paper instead?
Guidance
This setup assumes you file online (deadline **31 January**). If you file a **paper** return instead, it must reach HMRC by **31 October** — three months earlier. This note creates nothing.
Welcome to your Self Assessment setup
Guidance
We've dated everything to your **31 January** filing deadline: register in time if you're newly self-employed (**by 5 October**), gather records, set money aside through the year, then **file and pay by 31 January** — plus the **31 July** second payment on account if it applies. Late filing is an automatic **£100 penalty even with no tax to pay**. Reinstall this setup each tax year for the next return. This note creates nothing.
