The clean burst of admin a new job needs — notice given, P45 handed over, pension checked and your first payslip verified, all dated to your start date.
Everything this setup adds to your household. Dates are worked out from your answers when you set it up.
Created as a project, with everything below inside it.
Give notice at your old job
Task · Due 6 weeks before your your start date at the new job
Give at least **1 week's notice** if you've worked there a month or more — but **check your contract**, which often requires longer (a month or more). Work back from your start date so your notice period fits.

Hand your P45 to new employer's name (or complete a starter checklist)
Task · Due 3 days after your your start date at the new job
Have a P45 from your last job? Give it to your new employer. **No P45** (or you left your last job before 6 April of the current tax year)? Complete HMRC's **starter checklist** and give it to your **employer — not to HMRC**. This sets your PAYE tax code correctly from the start.
Check you're enrolled in the workplace pension & set your contributions
Task · Due 4 weeks after your your start date at the new job
By law your employer must **auto-enrol** you if you're aged 22 up to State Pension age, usually work in the UK and earn over the auto-enrolment earnings threshold (**check this year's figure on gov.uk**). Your employer can **postpone enrolment by up to 3 months** but must tell you in writing, and you can ask to join sooner. The minimum total contribution is currently around **8% of qualifying earnings** (at least 3% from your employer) — check the current rates and band. You can opt out once enrolled, but you'd lose the employer's contribution, so think carefully.
Professional membership
Record · Membership · 30 days' notice · Renews 12 months after your your start date at the new job
If you hold a professional body membership or licence for this role, track its renewal so it never lapses. Set the provider and reference once you have them.
Welcome to your New Job setup
Guidance
We've added the admin a new job needs — wrapping up your old job, handing over your P45 (or a starter checklist), checking your workplace pension, updating HR, reviewing benefits and a first-payslip check ~6 weeks in — all dated to your start date. The money figures (auto-enrolment thresholds, the pension band, your tax code) change each tax year, so we link to the live gov.uk pages rather than quoting a number. This note creates nothing.

Sign in to set upUpdate your address & bank details with HR
Task · Due 7 days after your your start date at the new job
Give HR/payroll your current address, bank details and next-of-kin so your first pay and any correspondence reach you.
Review your new benefits & enrol in the ones you want
Task · Due 2 weeks after your your start date at the new job
Look at the benefits your new employer offers — health cover, life cover, cycle-to-work, season-ticket loans, memberships — and enrol in the ones you want. These are employer-specific perks, not statutory entitlements, so what's on offer varies.
Set up / transfer any professional memberships
Task · Due 3 weeks after your your start date at the new job
If your role needs a professional body membership or licence, set it up or transfer it — and check whether your employer pays for it.
Sort your commute & parking
Task · Due 1 week before your your start date at the new job
Work out the route, buy a season ticket if it's cheaper, and arrange a parking permit or cycle storage before day one.
Check your first payslip & tax code
Event · Starts 6 weeks after your your start date at the new job
Check your tax code and pay on an early payslip. If you're on an **emergency tax code** (shown with **W1**, **M1** or **X**), HMRC usually fixes it automatically once it has your details — this can take up to about 5 weeks — and any overpaid tax is refunded through payroll. Don't panic, but do check the code looks right for your situation (most people with one job get the standard code). Verify it online at gov.uk/check-income-tax-current-year.
Commute — season ticket / parking
Cost · £150.00 · Recurring · Payment On your your start date at the new job
A recurring outgoing for travel to work — adjust the amount and cadence to your season ticket, fuel or parking. Check whether your employer offers a season-ticket loan.
