  Around results day in August (the date moves each year and differs by qualification and nation — check this year's). Firm/insurance choices are confirmed then, or explore Clearing if results differ from the offer.

• Open a student bank account

  Student accounts often bundle an interest-free overdraft and small perks — compare a few once the place is confirmed.

• Set up a termly budget & allowance

  Confirm halls or a private tenancy, note the deposit and the contract start/end dates, and diarise any deposit deadline so the place isn't lost.

• Arrange contents insurance for halls

  Laptops and phones in shared accommodation are worth covering. Some halls include basic cover — check before buying, and top up if needed.

• Get a 16-25 / student Railcard

  The 16-25 Railcard gives around a third off most rail fares — for anyone aged 16–25, or a mature full-time student in UK study. Worth it for trips home; check the current price before buying.
